A security probe has been launched after a memory stick containing details of up to 6,360 prisoners was lost – with the password attached to it.
The USB data stick was lost by a health worker at Preston prison.

All the patients are, or have been, a prisoner at Her Majesty’s Prison Preston.

The missing memory stick was encrypted, but the password had been attached to the device.

Information lost included prisoners’ surnames, prison numbers, cell locations and references to medical conditions such as asthma, mental health and even sexual health references.

Health workers from NHS Central Lancashire involved in the incident have been suspended while the investigation takes place.
